Shared Challenge, Collective Opportunity

Perceptions of assertiveness and aggression often differ due to gender biases deeply embedded in societal norms. These biases are a challenge that is especially visible in sports.

  • Biases shape how behaviors are interpreted, often differently for men and women.

  • Biases limit and stunt the potential for creative leadership.

  • Biases stunt innovative solutions and meaningful progress.

By perpetuating outdated stereotypes, we risk missing out on the transformative power of cognitive diversity, which thrives when leadership styles are valued irrespective of gender.

This is how I see it:

A Shared Challenge  → A Collective Opportunity

👫 Societal Expectations

Leadership traits like assertiveness, confidence, and decisiveness are often associated with masculinity. When men exhibit these qualities, they are praised as strong and capable. Women, instead, may face scrutiny or be unfairly labeled as aggressive or domineering because of outdated societal expectations that they should be accommodating or demure. This isn't just a women's issue; it's a leadership issue that affects everyone striving for a fair and inclusive culture.

🗣️ Language and Perception

Words matter. When men are described as "strong-willed" or "determined," women displaying identical traits might be labeled "bossy" or "pushy." This difference in language shapes how people are perceived and how they perceive themselves. We should be more aware and intentional with the words we choose. We can uplift and empower all leaders with our word choice.

👀 Unintentional and Implicit Bias

Unconscious biases often lead to unfair judgments of behavior. By recognizing and addressing these biases, we can foster environments where everyone feels valued and supported for their perspectives, opinions and unique leadership styles. Instead of judging, stay curious about others’ perspectives and ideas and ask teammates and colleagues to point out any times you might be acting with implicit bias.

📝 Historical Context

In traditionally male-dominated fields such as sports leadership, women entering these roles often challenge the status quo. Their assertiveness may be viewed more critically than their male counterparts, but this perception reflects historical imbalances rather than individual merit.

Together, we can rewrite the narrative and unlock the full potential of inclusive and innovative leadership.

Together, we can reshape the narrative by championing merit and

embracing cognitive diversity.

Overcoming these biases requires intentional efforts to shift cultural norms and challenge traditional gender roles. We can lead this transformation by implementing the following:

🙌🏼 Celebrating diverse leadership styles, prioritizing skills and contributions over limiting stereotypes.

💪🏼 Embrace language that empowers rather than divides; create an environment that fosters mutual respect and collaboration from everyone regardless of what makes us different or what roles we are assigned.

💡 Supporting initiatives and mentorship programs that amplify underrepresented voices in leadership helps cultivate a culture of innovation by welcoming and valuing everyone’s contributions. You may not implement every perspective, but by considering them all, you lose nothing and gain valuable insights that can drive progress and creativity.

By working together to create standards that elevate leadership qualities, we can pave the way for a more equitable and thriving future - one that embraces creativity, innovation and the strengths of diverse perspectives. The conversation starts here, but its impact can reach far beyond.
